Year 6
A year to shine, an adventure to remember and a confident step towards what comes next.
Year 6 is a special milestone. It brings together the friendships, discoveries and achievements of primary school while opening the door to new possibilities. Children take on greater responsibility, enjoy unforgettable experiences and prepare for secondary school with the encouragement of adults who know them well.
We want every child to finish their Bloxham journey feeling proud of how far they have come and excited about where they are going.
Ambition and achievement
Our oldest pupils are encouraged to think deeply, explain their ideas and challenge themselves. In 2026, 31.1% achieved the higher standard in reading, while 10.5% achieved the combined higher standard across reading, writing and mathematics.
Behind these achievements are opportunities to explore demanding texts, discuss different interpretations, solve unfamiliar problems and refine work with care. Teachers provide challenge and carefully targeted support, helping children build on their strengths and take their next steps.
We celebrate achievement in its many forms: a thoughtful explanation, a breakthrough in understanding, a confident performance or the determination to keep trying.
History that feels real
Our Britain at War learning invites children to consider the experiences of people whose lives were changed by conflict. A visit to Holdenby House brings wartime history to life, while visitors from Bloxham Museum have shared artefacts and local knowledge, connecting national events with our own community.
Books such as When the Sky Falls deepen this exploration, encouraging children to consider characters’ feelings, choices and circumstances. They use their growing understanding to create vivid descriptions and thoughtful responses.
Children think like historians, questioning sources, considering perspectives and supporting conclusions with evidence. Topics are explored in depth, with foundational knowledge revisited so that children can make increasingly sophisticated connections.
Discoveries without boundaries
Our Frozen Kingdoms project takes children far beyond Oxfordshire to investigate polar landscapes, wildlife and the challenges of life in extreme environments. Experiences such as a virtual expedition with an expert from the Scott Polar Research Institute bring specialist knowledge into the classroom and give children opportunities to ask their own questions.
Science and engineering offer further possibilities. In a workshop supported by Jaguar Land Rover, Year 6 pupils explored electric vehicles and designed and built their own models, connecting scientific understanding with creativity and the world of work.
Practical investigations encourage children to think like scientists: make predictions, test ideas carefully and explain what the evidence shows.
Learning they can put to work
Year 6 children discover how their knowledge can help them tackle real challenges. Designing their own theme parks has involved applying area, perimeter and budgeting skills, balancing imaginative ideas with available space and money.
In Food for Life, children have compared homemade and processed foods, considered ingredients and nutrition, and baked their own bread and muffins. These experiences develop practical skills while encouraging informed choices.
Across subjects, children retrieve earlier learning, use precise vocabulary and become increasingly confident in explaining both what they know and how they know it.
An adventure they will carry with them
Our residential visit to Kilvrough is a highlight of the Bloxham journey. From climbing and abseiling to caving, bodyboarding and coastal exploration, children experience challenges that call for courage, cooperation and perseverance.
There are proud moments when a child tries something new, friends encourage one another and a group discovers what it can achieve together. Time away also builds independence, with familiar staff providing reassurance and encouragement.
Children return with stories, shared memories and a stronger belief in themselves.
Opportunities to lead and make a difference
Year 6 is a chance to become someone younger children look up to. As House Captains, Librarians, Sports Leaders and Play Buddies, pupils take on meaningful responsibilities and discover that leadership starts with listening, encouraging others and setting a positive example.
Whether helping a younger child join a game, organising resources or representing their house, children learn that their contribution matters. Our House Captains have represented Bloxham at the village Remembrance Service, laying a wreath on behalf of the school, and helped lead fundraising activities alongside Pupil Parliament.
These opportunities develop confidence, initiative and a sense of service. They bring our vision, “Encourage one another and build each other up,” to life—and help children carry those qualities into secondary school.
Ready for secondary school
We give the move to secondary school the attention it deserves. Links with receiving schools, transition visits and opportunities to ask questions help children become familiar with their next setting. Staff share information about children’s learning, strengths and support needs, with additional preparation where it will help.
In school, we practise the habits that make the next step easier: organising belongings, managing responsibilities, working independently and knowing when to ask for help. Children have space to talk about both their excitement and their worries.
Our Junior Citizen Visit adds practical preparation for growing independence. Through realistic scenarios, children learn about safety around roads, railways and water, recognising hazards and making sensible decisions.
Celebrating the Bloxham journey
Sharing learning through assemblies, representing the school and celebrating together make the final year memorable. End-of-year celebrations provide time to reflect on friendships, recognise achievements and mark the people children have become.
We want children to leave with more than memories of their favourite trip or lesson. We want them to recognise their strengths, value their friendships and feel ready to contribute to a new community—carrying Bloxham’s caring, inclusive and ambitious spirit with them.
These highlights give you a flavour of life in Year 6 at Bloxham, where thoughtfully chosen visits, activities and experiences bring learning to life. Each year brings new opportunities to explore, discover and grow.
Each term, we share a curriculum overview outlining the learning journey, alongside knowledge organisers introducing key concepts and vocabulary. Current families can find these and further resources on our Parent Portal. Fluency homework helps children revisit foundational knowledge, practise vocabulary and share their discoveries at home.
