At Bloxham, learning French opens a window onto different places, people and ways of life. We want children to enjoy the discovery of a new language—from greeting a friend to the satisfaction of understanding and holding a simple conversation.

We are fortunate to have a native French speaker and two other fluent members of staff, bringing authentic pronunciation, expertise and enthusiasm to children’s learning. We also use Language Angels to support carefully sequenced teaching and accurate pronunciation, helping pupils develop secure foundations and the confidence to speak.

Lessons give children opportunities to listen, speak, read and write in French. Through songs, games, stories and conversation, pupils practise new vocabulary, revisit familiar language and build towards using words and phrases independently. They learn to listen closely, recognise patterns and draw on what they already know to understand something new.

Speaking another language takes courage. Our encouraging approach helps children have a go, learn from mistakes and celebrate their progress. As their knowledge grows, they begin to combine vocabulary and express their own ideas, moving from individual words towards sentences and simple exchanges.

French also brings learning about culture to life. Children explore similarities and differences between their own experiences and those of people in French-speaking communities, developing curiosity and respect for different traditions and ways of living. They discover that languages connect people—and that French is spoken far beyond France.

By the time pupils leave Bloxham, we want them to approach secondary language learning with strong foundations, growing independence and an eagerness to discover more. Whether they are travelling, meeting someone new or considering future opportunities, learning French helps them picture a world full of possibilities.
