At Bloxham, we want children to know that they are valued for who they are. Our PSHE curriculum and extensive pastoral support work together to help them build self-belief, develop positive relationships and approach life with confidence. We encourage high aspirations, helping children discover that effort, perseverance and the right support can open up new possibilities.

We teach PSHE through Jigsaw, a progressive programme that revisits and deepens learning as children grow. A shared whole-school theme each term connects our community, with learning matched to pupils’ ages and needs. Our broad and balanced curriculum develops knowledge and skills that support children’s learning across subjects and prepare them for life within a local and global community.

Children explore friendships, relationships, physical and mental health, growing and changing, safety, responsibility and economic wellbeing. They learn to recognise feelings, consider different perspectives, make informed choices and understand how their actions affect others. We give them space to ask questions and discuss issues that matter to them.

Our pastoral offer is a particular strength of Bloxham. Our pastoral and nurture team, including our Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA), works alongside teachers and families to understand children’s needs and provide thoughtful, individual support. This may include help with friendships, emotional understanding, confidence or managing difficult experiences. Children have trusted adults who know them, listen carefully and help them move forward.

Behaviour support is part of this caring approach. We help children understand expectations, recognise what influences their behaviour and develop strategies for making positive choices. Through restorative conversations, they learn to listen, take responsibility and repair relationships. Our message is consistent: every child is worthy of care, encouragement and the opportunity to grow.

This support connects directly with classroom learning. Zones of Regulation is woven into our in-class curriculum, reinforced through twice-daily feelings check-ins and weekly Zones assemblies. Children develop a shared language for describing emotions and learn strategies to manage them. Adults help pupils apply these skills throughout the day, whether they are approaching a challenge, resolving a disagreement or asking for support.

We enrich our curriculum with relevant local opportunities. Junior Citizens helps older pupils explore practical safety scenarios and prepare for greater independence. Our safeguarding partnerships, including SCIB, connect learning with local priorities, strengthening children’s understanding of keeping safe, recognising concerns and seeking help.

Fundraising brings economic learning to life. Children explore how money is raised, consider choices about its use and see how working together can support others. These experiences connect practical understanding with compassion, community responsibility and the satisfaction of making a difference.

Leadership gives children further opportunities to put their learning into action. Pupil Parliament members represent others and experience democracy; play buddies help children feel included; reading ambassadors share their enthusiasm; and Eco Warriors promote sustainability. Pupils practise communication, cooperation and decision-making while discovering that their contribution matters.
