Starting school is a special moment for children and their families. At Bloxham, our Reception Year gives children a warm welcome, adults who get to know them well and exciting spaces to explore. It is an inclusive place where children feel they belong, their ideas matter and they can be themselves.

Ofsted recognised this in July 2025, judging our early years provision Good and reporting "Children get off to a strong start."

A day full of discovery

Step into our Reception Year and you might find children building together, retelling a favourite story, creating something at the art table or investigating water and materials outdoors. Our spaces are carefully planned around children’s physical, social and learning needs, with resources they can choose and use for themselves.

Children learn through a thoughtful balance of adult-led teaching, small-group activities and independent exploration. Our team takes learning further by introducing a new word, asking a question or encouraging a child to try another approach.

We recognise that children learn in different ways and at different rates. By observing their play and talking with them, we discover what they understand and plan their next steps. We are ambitious for every child, helping them build confidence and the determination to keep trying.

Room to explore outdoors

Our generous outdoor space, shared with Bloxham Pre-School, is an important part of children’s learning. They can balance, climb, investigate, build and create, developing coordination and the smaller movements they need for drawing and writing.

Outdoor learning reaches across the curriculum. Children might count materials for a construction, explain how they will make it stronger, take turns with equipment or make marks to record an idea. There is room to be creative, work together and test something out.

These experiences help children become increasingly independent while learning to be caring towards others. They share resources, listen to ideas and encourage one another and build each other up.

Stories that spark imagination

Books and storytelling are part of everyday life. Through Drawing Club, children enter imaginative worlds, develop their vocabulary and turn their ideas into drawings and early writing. Our Magpie Walls celebrate interesting words, encouraging children to collect them and use them in conversations and stories.

Daily Read Write Inc. phonics helps children learn sounds, blend them into words and experience the excitement of reading for themselves. When children need extra practice, we provide support to help them move forward.

Building strong foundations

Children develop a sense of number through Mastering Number, practical resources, games and discussion. They explore quantities, patterns and relationships, learning to explain what they notice.

Alongside reading, writing and mathematics, we give close attention to communication, physical development and friendships. Children practise recognising feelings, being honest, asking for help and solving problems together. Everyday responsibilities help them become trustworthy and take pride in what they can do.

Known, supported and ready to grow

Every child has a key person who gets to know their interests, strengths and next steps. Families are essential partners: what you share about your child at home helps us understand them more fully, celebrate their progress and work together when they need extra support.

Our partnership with Bloxham Pre-School has been established since 2004, supporting familiar relationships and a smooth transition into school. We also work with other early years settings to welcome children from across our community.

Our learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, providing a broad foundation for children’s development, learning and wellbeing. By the end of Reception, children have grown as learners, friends and individuals.

They are prepared well for key stage 1.

A strong start, with confidence to grow

At Bloxham, a happy, nurturing start goes hand in hand with strong foundations for learning. In 2025, 75% of our Reception children achieved a Good Level of Development, comfortably above the national figure of 68.3%. In 2026, this rose to 84%—helping children move into Year 1 with secure foundations in communication, relationships, physical development, reading, writing and mathematics.
