Year 4
New adventures, growing confidence and discoveries close to home.
Year 4 is a year for stretching imaginations, taking on challenges and discovering greater independence. Children explore the world through stories, investigations, creative projects and experiences beyond the classroom. Along the way, they build secure knowledge, deepen friendships and discover just how much they can achieve.
Maths confidence worth celebrating
We want children to experience the satisfaction of understanding maths, explaining their thinking and solving a challenging problem.
Our 2026 Multiplication Tables Check results give us plenty to celebrate: children achieved an average score of 21.42 out of 25, with 38% achieving a perfect 25 out of 25. These achievements reflect the emphasis we place on helping children build secure multiplication knowledge and confidence in maths.
Regular practice, varied retrieval opportunities and carefully targeted support help children become increasingly fluent. Practical resources and our “I do, we do, you do” approach develop understanding, so children can apply their multiplication knowledge in calculations, fractions, measurement and problem-solving.
Experiences such as our Magical Maths workshop add opportunities to explore patterns, tackle puzzles and enjoy mathematical discoveries.
History with a connection to home
Our study of Anglo-Saxons and Vikings invites children to investigate how invasions, settlements and changing kingdoms shaped Britain. They explore evidence, ask questions and consider how the past has influenced the places we know today.
Here in Bloxham, that history feels especially close. The village’s name has Saxon origins, giving children a connection between their classroom learning and their own community. History becomes something they can recognise around them.
We encourage children to think like historians, drawing on sources and explaining their conclusions. Revisiting foundational knowledge helps them connect new discoveries with earlier learning and develop a deeper understanding over time.
Stories that deserve an audience
From the dramatic world of Beowulf to the discoveries within The Gut Garden, books inspire children to read closely, discuss ideas and write with purpose.
Year 4 pupils have created atmospheric descriptions of Beowulf’s Sea Hag and used their science knowledge to explain the digestive system. Exploring The Saga of Erik the Viking has included drama and percussion soundscapes, helping children imagine a storm before capturing it in words.
These experiences give children something meaningful to say—and the vocabulary, understanding and confidence to say it well.
Our surroundings become our classroom
A river walk to the Gogs has inspired Year 4 children to observe their surroundings closely and create imaginative poetry, which they then performed for the school.
Local exploration makes geography tangible. Children connect what they learn about water, landscapes and the environment with places they know. Conversations with our caretaker about water use in school have also helped them consider conservation and their own responsibilities.
Learning begins with noticing, grows through questioning and becomes something children can explain and apply.
Investigate, create and discover
Why does sound travel? What changes when a sound becomes louder or higher? Year 4 scientists investigate ideas through practical exploration, learning to observe carefully and explain what they find.
Children have also brought states of matter to life by moving like particles, using an active, memorable experience to explore the differences between solids, liquids and gases.
Creativity runs through the year. In Warp and Weft, children explore weaving techniques and create their own woven pieces. Music, French, computing and PE offer further opportunities to develop skills, express ideas and discover new interests.
An adventure in independence
Our residential visit to Whitemoor Lakes is a much-anticipated part of Year 4. Time away together gives children opportunities to try new activities, support their friends and experience the pride of doing something they were not sure they could do.
With encouragement from familiar staff, children take steps towards greater independence and return with stories to share, shared memories and growing confidence.
Our vision, “Encourage one another and build each other up,” comes alive in these moments: cheering on a friend, working together and recognising that everyone brings different strengths.
These highlights give you a flavour of life in Year 4 at Bloxham, where thoughtfully chosen visits, activities and experiences bring learning to life. Each year brings new opportunities to explore, discover and grow.
Each term, we share a curriculum overview outlining the learning journey, alongside knowledge organisers introducing key concepts and vocabulary. Current families can find these and further resources on our Parent Portal. Fluency homework helps children revisit foundational knowledge, practise vocabulary and share their discoveries at home.
