What can you make with a piece of clay, a sheet of paper or an idea that is entirely your own?

At Bloxham, art gives children a way to look closely, experiment and express what they think and feel. We want them to enjoy making things, take pride in developing a skill and know that their work does not have to look exactly like anyone else’s.

Explore, make, improve

Children learn about colour, shape, pattern, texture and form by trying out materials and techniques. They look at the work of artists and designers, talk about what they notice and use those discoveries in their own way. Their sketchbooks give them space to collect ideas, practise and see how their work develops.

The results are wonderfully varied. Year 2 children have made clay sculptures inspired by Yayoi Kusama. Year 3 have explored botanical weaving. Year 5 have even made their own paper, while Year 6 have combined materials and techniques in mixed-media collages. Each project asks children to learn something new and make choices of their own.

Art worth sharing

A portrait workshop with Cotswolds Arts Through Schools has given children the chance to learn from visiting artists. Across the school, artwork becomes part of displays and shared celebrations, so children can see that what they make matters to other people too.

Children learn to explain their choices and look thoughtfully at their own work and the work of others. We want them to leave Bloxham willing to try an unfamiliar technique, confident enough to change an idea and proud to say, “I made that.”
