Educational Visits and Residentials

Big adventures. Lasting memories. The confidence to say, “I did it!”

Some school moments stay with us for a lifetime: standing inside a castle, discovering something extraordinary in a museum, paddling a canoe with friends or reaching the top of a climbing wall. At Bloxham, educational visits and residentials are an exciting part of growing up—and a purposeful part of learning.

From Reception to Year 6, we create opportunities for children to explore beyond the classroom, encounter different places and people, and discover what they are capable of. Each experience builds on learning in school, helping children connect knowledge with the world around them.

Learning brought to life

Our locality offers a wealth of possibilities. Visits to Bloxham and Banbury museums help children uncover stories close to home, while places such as the Rollright Stones, Warwick Castle and Blenheim Palace bring history into view. Experiences at the Earth Trust help pupils explore Stone Age life, and Holdenby House offers an immersive encounter with wartime England.

Children’s experiences have also included discovering wildlife at Cotswold Wildlife Park, exploring rivers in the local landscape and visiting Compton Verney’s Shang Dynasty exhibition before creating their own clay dings. These opportunities give children something to investigate, discuss and draw upon long after they return.

Visitors bring fresh perspectives into school too. Historical experience days, specialist workshops and people sharing their own experiences invite children to ask questions, handle materials and make discoveries in familiar surroundings.

Growing independence, one adventure at a time

Our residential programme gives children two important milestones: a two-night stay in Year 4 and a four-night stay in Year 6. Familiar staff support them as they take on new responsibilities, strengthen friendships and experience the pride of managing something for themselves.

Being away together offers learning that reaches beyond individual activities. Children organise their belongings, share spaces, listen to instructions and look after one another. They discover that independence grows through practice—and that asking for help is part of becoming confident.

Year 4: a first adventure at Whitemoor Lakes

Our Year 4 residential at Whitemoor Lakes provides an exciting first taste of staying away from home. Within a single centre, children enjoy a varied programme of activities that may include climbing, buggy building, problem-solving, fencing and zip wire.

There are opportunities to be brave, think creatively and work as a team. A child might suggest a solution to a building challenge, encourage a friend to try something unfamiliar or discover a strength they did not know they had.

Alongside the activities come the shared meals, conversations and laughter that make a residential special. Children return with stories to tell, stronger friendships and growing confidence in their own abilities.

Year 6: new horizons at Kilvrough

Our Year 6 residential at Kilvrough Manor on the Gower Peninsula offers a memorable adventure as children approach the end of primary school. Over four nights, pupils experience outdoor learning in a striking coastal landscape, with activities such as caving, canoeing and climbing.

Each challenge offers a different opportunity to grow. Canoeing calls for cooperation and careful listening; climbing encourages perseverance; and caving invites children to approach an unfamiliar environment with curiosity and courage.

Activities vary with the season and conditions. Summer visits may include bodyboarding, while winter evenings can bring woodland exploration and den building by head torch. Whatever the programme, children share experiences that help them recognise their progress and prepare for the greater independence of secondary school.

Our vision and values in action

“Encourage one another and build each other up” comes to life throughout these experiences. It is the friend offering reassurance before a climb, the group listening to everyone’s ideas and the shared celebration when someone achieves a personal goal.

Children practise all six Bloxham values: being inclusive when working together, caring when someone needs encouragement, ambitious when tackling a challenge, trustworthy when following safety instructions, creative when solving problems and honest about when they need support.

These are opportunities to Be. Build. Become. Be yourself and discover your strengths. Build knowledge, confidence and relationships. Become increasingly independent, capable and ready for what comes next.

A partnership with families

We work with families to prepare children for visits and residentials, sharing practical information and discussing individual needs so that pupils can participate with confidence. During residentials, staff aim to share updates and photographs, giving families a glimpse of the discoveries and achievements along the way.

Each year brings a thoughtfully chosen programme. The experiences featured here offer a flavour of life at Bloxham; activities vary to reflect children’s learning, availability and conditions. Current families can find dates, arrangements and preparation information through our Parent Portal.

At Bloxham, a visit is more than a day out. It is a chance to make learning memorable, friendships stronger and a child’s world a little bigger.
