Be Inclusive - Headteacher letter
We are aware that some members of our community have been unsettled by the presence of St George’s flags on lampposts in the village and are concerned about the impact on our school family.
Bloxham is a school which welcomes children and families from a wide range of heritages. This gives us a depth and diversity of culture that is something to be celebrated and cherished. Every pupil is welcome here, all cultures are included, and everyone is treated with equity. We believe each child and family brings something of real value to our school community, and together we are stronger.
This term, our PSHE curriculum Being Me in My World is supporting children to reflect on personal identity, to understand rights and responsibilities, and to learn how to value the contributions of others. These classroom discussions echo the themes we are sharing in our collective worship — that every child belongs, every voice matters, and our differences are a strength.
The flags that hang in our corridors are the Union Flag, a reminder that we are part of one nation which itself is made up of many identities and cultures. Alongside this, we actively promote the Fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs. These values are not abstract concepts; they are lived out in how we treat one another, and they directly support our school values of being Inclusive, Caring, Ambitious, Trustworthy, Creative, and Honest. This links directly to our vision “Encourage one another and build each other up.” At Bloxham, we believe this vision comes to life when every child and family feels welcomed, respected, and valued for who they are.
I want to reassure families that discrimination and intolerance will not be accepted at Bloxham. All our school families should be able to feel safe and supported by each other, both on our premises and in the wider community. Thank you for your continued support in making our school a place where every family feels at home and every child can flourish.
With best wishes,
Sarah Marshall
